Massolino Vigna Rionda is a family run winery, spanning over four generations. It is their true belief that in order to have a great future, one must look to the past. Barolo has always held a special place in the Massolino family heart, as they believed in its austere uniqueness, and by upholding a philosophy when it comes to their wine-making. This philosophy consists of minimal intervention, in order to capture all the qualities that their soils and grapes can create in a glass.

Massolino was founded in 1896, after analysing archive documents and written notes left by the family’s ancestors, great-grandfather Giovanni. Initially production was mixed, consisting of fruit, vegetables, livestock farming and bulk wine sales, as that was customary in the Langhe.

In 1934, grandfather Giuseppe, Giovanni’s son, contributed to the birth of a wine protection consortium, the Consorzio di Tutela Varolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe, Dogliani, and starts selling small amounts of bottled wine for the first time.
Moving on, in 1956 came the acquisition of Vigna Rionda, a high-risk, high-reward acquisition, that has since paid off lucratively. Since then numerous CRUs have been purchased in order to expand the estate and enrich the family vineyards. And finally in 1982, the first bottle of Vigna Rionda is made in the form of Barolo DOCG, sowed, harvested and created for the tables of wine lovers around the world. By this point, the estate is run by the third generation of the family, where Renato, Giovanni and Camilla continue to uphold their family’s tradition.

As the fourth generation takes over, the latest Cru purchase completes the Barolo range offered by Massolino Vigna Rionda. This additions allows the horizon to be broadened beyond the boarders of Serralunga d’Alba.
