On 31st March, Malta commemorates Freedom Day (Jum il-Ħelsien), marking the withdrawal of foreign military forces from the island in 1979 and the country’s full sovereignty.

This important national holiday reflects a significant milestone in Malta’s modern history, symbolising independence, self-determination and national pride.

Each year, official ceremonies take place at the Freedom Day Monument, where dignitaries lay wreaths in remembrance of this historic event. The day is also celebrated across the islands with regattas, particularly in the Grand Harbour, where traditional boat races bring communities together in a vibrant display of Maltese culture.

Beyond the formal commemorations, Jum il-Ħelsien serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity that have shaped Malta into the nation it is today.

At M&Z plc, we join in recognising the importance of this day and the values it represents for the Maltese people.
