Mosquitoes and Their Bites
Mosquitoes are unwelcome companions that love to join in on our summer BBQs and family outings. Whilst they are bothersome, mosquitoes play an important role in our ecosystem. They are at the bottom of the food-chain, providing important nourishment for fish, lizards and bats as well as being important pollinators.
With high summer temperatures, mosquitoes are guaranteed to be out and about. This is why it is important to keep your children protected from mosquitoes and their nasty bites. Fortunately, there are plenty of natural ways to go about this.
Preventing Mosquito Bites Indoors
Our first line of defense indoors is nets. Be sure to keep insect screens closed if you have them. Chicco offers a range of nets for prams and cots for added protection indoors. They also offer a net for strollers for when you and your baby are out and about.
Plants, such as geraniums, lavender, basil or lemongrass placed on windowsills are also useful. However, make sure to prevent stagnant water from pooling in the pot dish. Citronella candles, are also effective methods of repelling mosquitoes, but be sure to only use these outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.
Anti-mosquito plug-ins are another good option. Chicco’s plug-in is silent, ensuring that your baby’s rest is not disturbed.
Repelling Mosquitoes When Out and About
So, what are our options for preventing mosquito bites when we’re out for a walk?
It’s a good idea to protect your child’s delicate skin with repellents that are formulated specifically for children. Chicco offers a range of child-friendly products perfect for preventing bites. These include their cream, their spray and their roll-on. These products feature natural ingredients such as melissa and crabwood oil which are known to repel mosquitoes.
Chicco also offers a portable anti-mosquito device and an anti mosquito trap perfect for repelling mosquitoes when out and about.
Soothing Itchy Mosquito Bites
What if the child already has a mosquito bite?
A moisturising and soothing cream is usually enough to ease itching and prevent your child from scratching. When the itching is particularly intense, you can apply ice – wrapped in a table cloth – directly onto the mosquito bite. The cold from the ice, cools the skin and minimises the itchiness of the bite.
Locally Chicco’s anti-mosquito range can be found in supermarkets, baby shops, select pharmacies and from our website.
